New Work: Halsey McKay, East Hampton, NY

Halsey McKay is pleased to present New Work, an exhibition of recent drawings by Sara Greenberger Rafferty. The current series of drawings leaves the photograph aside, and foregrounds the handmade alongside color combinations that evoke palettes, test patterns, and seasonal collections. The small scaled drawings - assembled strips of plastic and acrylic polymer paint on paper - can be easily described as a series of vertical stripes. However, they are also undulating, adjusting, imprecise, and variable. They assemble and disassemble, multiply and morph - into ombres, glitches, and offbeat patterns.

This is Rafferty's second solo show with the gallery - although she has been a Halsey McKay interlocutor for almost fifteen years - the first exhibition to include the artist's drawings in approximately twenty years.

In her career she has mounted over twenty solo exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world. Her most recent institutional solo exhibition, Forum 85, was presented at the Carnegie Museum of Art at the end of 2021. In 2014 she was included in the Whitney Biennial, and her first solo exhibition was presented at MOMA/PS1 in New York in early 2006.

Her work is included in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; the Yale University Art Museum, New Haven, CT; the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Chicago, IL; and the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth, Hanover, NH and dozens of private collections.
