Coming Across: Expression and Empowerment: Analog Diary, Beacon
Analog Diary is pleased to present Coming Across: Expression and Empowerment, a group show exploring Feminist themes related to expressions of identity and empowerment through attire.
From the outset of visual history, clothing has been depicted as a vehicle for conveying social commentary, individuality, activism, or subversion. Greek Red Figure pottery from the 4th Century BCE, for example, portrayed Amazon warrior women clad in distinctive dress, like heavily patterned leggings and tunics emblazoned with repeated imagery like animals and evil eyes; as such, this depiction marked the Amazons as unique. Throughout the course of time, artists have continued to explore clothing's ability to transcend utilitarianism, challenging and re-defining garment-driven classifications. Combining recent historical works alongside those of contemporary artists, we arrive at a new understanding of femme freedom and empowerment as expressed through dress.
